When action is a must, not a nice thing to doInaction is usually the biggest reason for lack of change in our lives for a better. If we choose not to act and take necessary steps to keep going after what we want to achieve or have, then the result is typically – a disappointment, regret, and no change in where we are, in comparison to where we said we want to be State of inaction that we live in – Why create New Year’s Resolutions backed by excuses and false promises to ourselves and others? So many people fall into this state of inaction every day, most frequently at the beginning of every year. Why? Because, this is when many of us make New Year’s resolutions and make plans to achieve the goals we’ve set. Whether your goal was to lose weight, build more muscular mass, run every day, go to school to keep pursuing your degree, learn a new profession, or any other goal, the main component in goal achievement is taking necessary steps to get you there, it requires you taking action. What happens instead is, we make all these awesome action-packed goals and never actually take any steps to do what we said we were going to do. Instead, we create excuses by finding reasons as to why we are not following through on our goals and commitments. Then why making New Year’s resolutions in the first place, or why setting goals in general? There’s no reason, unless our goals and commitments are backed by action vs. just false promises to ourselves and others. Start today, start now, not soon or next week – Doing what you can today with resources and time that you have left at the end of the day/week In one of the prior blog modules I’ve discussed the importance of doing what you can today, with resources and time that you have today, vs. waiting for the right time to come and find you. It is absolutely applicable here as well, because, guess what, opportunity only comes to those you are ready and open to receive it. But more importantly, it comes to those who are actually taking necessary actions and steps to go after their goals and dreams. If you are not sure if you are ready to take required actions to go after your goal(s), then it usually means that you either don’t really need it or want it bad enough. If you really want something in life, regardless how big or small this something is, you will find a way to go after it, and if you don’t want it bad enough or need it, you will find every possible reason in the book why you cannot or should not pursue that one thing today. Do I really want it? Important questions to ask yourself when setting a new goal So, next time when you are setting a new goal, creating a New Year’s resolution, or are looking for a change, ask yourself the question – “Do I really want and need it today, and am I ready to make necessary steps to start working towards this one thing or goal today?” Also, ask yourself: “How bad do I want it or need it?” If the answer is ‘yes’ and ‘I need/want it now’, then there should be no excuse not to try and start working towards that one thing, that one goal immediately, regardless how big or small those steps may be. What’s important is to start now with what you can, and then learn and add to your action plan along the way. However, if the answer is ‘no’, or ‘I don’t really need/want it now’, well, then take time to understand what you really want in life before making it as one of your goals and creating action plan around it. In conclusion… If you truly want something bad enough, you will find a way to reach it. It may take some time, actually, it may take a long time, but you will reach it. However, if you don’t want to reach or achieve whatever that may be, you will find a list of excuses for not trying, or you will find something or someone to blame for your own lack of effort.
