Making a mindset shift from planning to taking action todayI know you’ve heard and read about the “I can and I will” approach to goal planning and visualization. However, even though I still believe that stating what you can and will do to achieve your goals is important, I feel like it leaves a room for an escape and/or a way out from staying focused on your goal(s), and doing everything that you can to get closer and ultimately achieving that what you said you can and will do. Why? Because, by stating that you can and will do something doesn’t commit you to actually taking necessary steps today to get you from sinning on your couch and just envisioning the outcome in your mind, vs. actually getting up from that couch and doing what you said you are going to do now, not tomorrow, not a month from now. Therefore, I think there’s an opportunity to modify the goal setting and achieving approach here. I call it “I can and I am” approach What is “I can and I am” Approach? Why should this approach be used daily when setting new, and working toward existing goals and plans? What “I can and I am” approach does is it requires you to commit to a specific action that you are doing now to reach a particular goal of yours. When you say that I can and I will do something, it essentially allows to take that action now, tomorrow, or year from now, there no specific commitment from you and no insight into what are you doing to achieve or get closer to what you have said you are going to accomplish. When you say: I can and I am dedicating 2 hours of my time each day/week to write high quality content, which then would be incorporated into a book, which is ultimately a main goal of yours, you are calling out the immediate action you are already taking to achieve your dream. Can you see the difference between both approaches? “I can and I will” is self-motivating and confidence boosting, where’s “I can and I am” is action-oriented, plus encompassing the benefits of the first approach. So, next time when you are ready to set a new goal or when you are reviewing and updating existing goals or plans of yours, ask yourself one question: “What am I doing today to achieve that specific goal or dream of mine? What immediate steps that I am taking today to get closer to the goal accomplishment?” Use “I can and I am” approach to help with adding clarity, accountability, and laser focus to understand that you are doing today and what you can be doing. At the end of the day, you choose whether you wish to remain where you are today without expecting for thing to change, or taking one step each day to create the life that you want for yourself and for those around you.
