Think of foundation as massive roots of a tree, where everything above the ground, what you see, is your present and future, and everything below the ground – the roots – is what you are doing to create your present and future. So, how do you create the future and life that you want for yourself? As T. Harv Eker said: “If you want to change the fruit, you have to change the roots. If you want to change the visible, you have to change the invisible first.”

Our focus is often wrong
Often times we tend to focus on the fruit, or what we see above the ground, good or bad. Some are completely satisfied with what they see on the ‘tree’, they have a job that pays the bills and maybe there’s something even left over for little bit of fun with friends and family. And that is absolutely ok, if you are satisfied with this type of lifestyle. But, I am guessing, because you are reading or listening to this, you are not satisfied with where you are today and want something more, something better. Wouldn’t be nice to do and have what you really want, not living paycheck to paycheck, have significant amount of money saved in your savings account, have plenty of money saved for fun and leisure – vacations, shopping, entertainment, etc.

Perhaps, but then you realize that you have very strict budget, enough to cover your monthly obligations, food, and gas for your car to take you to  and from your full time job, maybe even a part-time job on the weekends. So, that is what you forget about fun activities, postpone your few days of vacation or staycation, turn on the tv and stay at home, sitting on your couch without any action, until it is time for you to go back to work. Another worry that person in this situation may have is that hopefully nothing else takes place which may require them to spend money, such as car breaking down, that you must repair, otherwise you will not be able to get to work, and other unexpected expenses for which you did not plan for and do not have money saved up in your ‘rainy day’ account. Then what do you do? Whom do you blame for lack of money and/or time? I can tell you what I used to do, I used to blame everything and everyone around me, but never myself or lack of  effort on my part.

Focusing on your ‘roots’ your foundation
I say used to, because, I’ve learned, and now clearly understand while sharing with others, what it is not the fruit or visible that person should focus their energy and attention on, but instead, the focus should go towards the ‘root’, your foundation, the part of you that nobody can see or know except for you. Only you can know and see the foundation that you are building. Only you can see how deep and strong your ‘roots’ are. You can take away from your existing foundation by making decisions that do not contribute any value but take value away – spending more than you make, blaming others for your failures, stop trying after facing a roadblock, spreading negativity, complaining how bad everything is in your life, etc.

However, you can also add to your foundation, grow your ‘roots’, make your foundation stronger and begin building it to create happier and more successful future for yourself and others around you.

How do you focus on your foundation, the invisible, to create the life that you really want?
  1. Stop complaining and telling everyone around you how bad everything is, all this does is attract more negative energy to you
  2. Trust in yourself and what you are capable of achieving by conducting self-analysis regularly and practice daily self-motivating mantras. Repeat motivational mantras out loud daily wherever it is most convenient for you, but do it, don’t skip it.
  3. Have a winning attitude at work, at home, or wherever you may be. Focus on the positive in every situation. Positive energy is contagious and will take you far.
  4. If you decide to start something, whether it is your own business, create another stream of income, going for the position that you want in your company, whatever it may be for you, just do it. Don’t wait for a better time, as there will never be a better time than NOW! You may not have everything you may need now to start, then start with what you have. The key here is to start and get moving.
  5. You are the one who creates your foundation and your future, and you determine how strong your foundation or ‘roots’ will be and what it’s going to look like. If you want to change your present, then you need to change your invisible, your ‘roots’, in order to see a result that you wish to see.

So, if you ask me if money can grow on trees, I will tell you that it depends on the ‘roots’ below the ground, your foundation, and what kind of ‘ingredients’ are being added to help ‘roots’ grow. How hard are you willing to work to change and improve your foundation?
