Why is Teachability an important attribute of a successful leader?

Hey everyone,

As leaders we must seek for a new information in order to continuously learn, teach and lead others. Successful leaders are always learning, whether it is by reading new books, magazine articles, online articles and blog posts or by learning from other successful leaders. In order for you to be an expert in your field, whether it is leadership, marketing, finance, or any other field, you should continuously refresh your existing knowledge base and add new relevant information into your knowledge bank. I believe that leaders are lifetime students, who learn, teach and lead others to achieve better and greater things in personal and business life. Of course, it is not enough for you to simply learn new information, but you also have to apply and use what you learn. For example, if you were able to attend a very interesting business/leadership conference, acquired a wealth of great new information, tools, and learned about new best practices which can help others and your business to grow, then you should absolutely share that information and knowledge. If the new acquired knowledge is not being used, then what value doe it add? Not much value, if you ask me. What's important to understand and remember, you do not have to wait for the right time to begin learning. Even if at the present time you are unable to attend a paid/expensive conference, training or seminar, don't wait, start with resources that's available to you today. Don't look for excuses why you can't do something, instead look for available opportunities. There are a lot of resources and tools available to you today that are absolutely free, all that's required is strong desire to learn.

People would follow a leader who is knowledgeable, competent, and confident, and they will be inspired to learn and grow if their leader displays teachability attribute and encourages and supports a learning culture. It is your responsibility as a leader to create, encourage and support a learning culture in your company, if you expect for your employees to enhance and expand their knowledge bank and develop personally and professionally, and helping your business to grow long term. Every person has some opportunities/areas that can be turned into strengths with commitment to learning, being open to constructive feedback, and strong desire towards continuous improvement. Don't wait for the right time, start today!

Key Takeaways:
  • Seek out new information and knowledge every day in pursuit of continuous learning, and deposit what you learn into your knowledge bank
  • Share what you learn with others and apply acquired knowledge by teaching others
  • Create and encourage a learning culture in your place of employment or your own business and help everyone around you to learn and grow personally and professionally
  • Remember that a good leader never stops learning
