Hey Everyone,

In module 16 I am discussing another attribute of a successful leader - Competence. Few items to remember regarding competence:
  • You cannot fake competence, even if you try very hard. People will immediately see if you are someone who is competent leader or not. They will know if you have the right knowledge about a specific subject or product. Therefore, if you do not have required level of knowledge in your line of work or business, then don't act as if you do, instead, focus on building your knowledge base in order to become the subject matter expert in your specific field
  • How does competence apply  in the daily life? Competent leaders inspire and lead others towards excellence. When people know and see you as someone who is competent, they will trust your decision making, work harder, and they will support you every step of the way on the journey and vision that you have presented to them.
  • If you do not know something, then reach out for feedback and help from others. Your peers will almost always be willing to help you when you need their assistance. This is also a very good way to establish trust with others. There's nothing wrong with admitting that you do not know everything, nobody does. You can always learn and continue building your knowledge base and eventually you will become a subject matter expert and others will come to your for an advice.
  • Remember to always be aware and manage the perception of yourself when interacting with others. You want to make sure that perception that you share is accurate and what you intend to share. Ask for feedback regularly as this will give you an opportunity to address any incorrect perception of you and will help you to grow personally and professionally
  • Resume is your personal & professional business card. Therefore, make sure that you list skills and achievement which are relevant and updated. You should be able to stand behind every word that you have listed in your resume.

Key takeaways from this module:
  1. Don't try to fake competence
  2. Be the subject matter expert in your line of work or business
  3. Remember that resume is your business card, therefore, keep it relevant and updated
