Would you stop pursuing your lifetime dream if you knew that success may be just around the corner? Where did our patience and persistence go? Society that we live in wants and expects everything that we hope to have or achieve immediately. We do not want to wait, we want it today. Same applies to goal-setting. Once we have set a goal, regardless of its complexity, we expect to reach it immediately even though our brain clearly understands that it is not possible, and that achieving set goal takes time, persistence, and organized focus. So, where did patience go? And how does lack of patience with expectations of immediate gratification affect final outcome? Instant gratification society we all live in Many of us, when instant gratification is not received from set objective or goal, we lose interest in whatever it may be. Take for example New Year’s resolutions. We set goals for the upcoming year, understand its value to us and important of reaching them, however, because we are not seeing immediate results, and good examples here would be – healthier eating, regular exercising, debt management and budgeting – few days of weeks later we lose interest in our once ambitious and important goals and revert to the old ways of doing things. We switch back to less healthier food options, we stop going to the gym regularly, we stop working and looking for ways to reach our lifetime goal and passion in life, whatever that may be for us. So, what happened? Is the goal that we’ve set became less important to us? No. We simply lost interest due to lack of immediate gratification in the form of immediate results that we were hoping to see. Well, I hate to break this out to you, but most things in life worth pursuing do require time, energy, and a lot of patience before satisfactory or expected results can be achieved and visible to us. Nobody said that it is going to be easy, but it would worth it in the end. If you stick with a plan long term regardless what you are working on or towards, results achieved when goal is attached would help you appreciate your persistence, hard work, patience, and often sacrifice. So, when setting new goals or re-setting existing ones, stick with your plan and give it all you’ve got until expected results or outcome has been achieved and, yes, it may take several months or even years to get there. Just don’t stop half way or near the finish line, because, you never know how close you may be to reaching end goal and finding success. Stay tough, persistent, focused on the goal and determined of reaching it, and you will get there. Why? Because you can, and because you deserve it.
