"Mastering others is strength. Mastering oneself makes you fearless"
Just because you are capable of managing others, it does not make you a great leader or mentor. One must learn how to manage his or her ego internally, be willing and ready to recognize own opportunities and weaknesses, and be ready to work hard to turn opportunities learned into personal strengths. It's equally important for a leader to be open to constructive feedback, and be willing to make necessary adjustments and take necessary steps to implement lessons learned from feedback received into personal development plan. Once we learn how to effectively manage ourselves, we could be able to open doors to the world of leadership, personal and professional growth and development.
"To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart"
With everything that we do, our mind gives us ideas and thoughts, but our heart helps us to determine and understand how to make those thoughts and ideas a reality. Our heart never lies. Our heart is like a compass that we all must use every day to help us navigate our way through life, and help others to do the same.
"The price of greatness is responsibility"
Creating, developing, or building something great is never the end result, it's just a beginning of a long and exciting journey. We must be teachers and mentors to those in need of support and guidance. Therefore, when we provide something great to the world, we are providing a very first step in access to greatness, for others and we are viewed as experts in what we do or provide. Goal should always be educate, support and help find solutions to problems that others may be dealing with vs. focusing solely on our own goals and objectives.
"Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other"
As a leader one must always be learning and expanding an existing knowledge base not only in the area of expertise, but in many different subjects and topics. Just like true leader never stops learning and being an example to others, including his or her subordinates, leader must never stop seeking new information, new training, and learning opportunities, in order to continue to grow personally as a strong leader. One could never know everything, but one can make an effort and commit to continuous learning every day. Every opportunity that we encounter in our personal or professional life presents new information, new experience, and new and different perspective on our everyday life experiences. So, keep on learning something new each day, be open to constructive feedback, and be hungry for more knowledge, because, your are a leader, and leader never stops learning.
"No legacy is so rich as honesty"
I believe that honesty goes a long way, especially if one is honest due to their own genuine intentions, and not because someone told them to. Often, it's not easy to deliver an honest message to an individual or a group of people, because, people are not used to hearing the truth, we are used to hearing beautiful stories that many of us often create to make something that may not be so positive but true sound more positive, with a goal to keep everyone happy towards us. However, at some point we must tell the truth, we must tell the real story, which is much more harder to do if one was not open and honest before to begin with. So, be honest with yourself and others at all times, and you wouldn't need to worry about correcting yourself or be concerned about what may come next if you were to be dishonest.
"All great masters are chiefly distinguished by the power of adding a second, a third, and perhaps a fourth step in a continuous line. Many a man had taken the first step. With every additional step you enhance immensely the value of your first."
It's important to remember to never stop half way on our journey of personal development, growth, professional progress. We must keep adding more each day to our knowledge and experience by seeking new opportunities to enhance and build on top of an existing knowledge foundation. As long as we are adding to such foundation, we are growing, we are moving forward, and we get closer to reaching our personal and professional goals that we've committed to accomplishing. It doesn't matter how fast or how slow is the progress that we are creating, what matters is that we keep trying, keep moving forward, overcoming problems and obstacles, and in turn creating forward progress vs. standing still in our comfort zone.
"Decisions are easy when values are clear"
In my opinion, our values is what dictates our choices, our habits, our present and our future. When we have clear set of values that we live by, we know exactly what actions that we must take or what choices that we need to make in our personal and professional lives, when faced with a problem, a dilemma, or an opportunity. We would not do something that goes against our values, which in turn eliminates the guesswork in tough decision-making situations. Our values are like a roadmap for how we live our life and what choices we make throughout life, especially when it comes to our family, friends, finances, career, and our personal beliefs. It's important to always remember our values and do not allow opinions of others to influence our decisions and choices based on what's important to them.
"Take a chance! All life is a chance. The person who goes the furthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare"
Often we hear from others - "Take a chance" when we mention that we would love to change something in our professional or personal life, when we express our desire for something new. However, taking a chance, trying something new, stepping into the unknown is not as easy or simple as it may seem to others. Life often presents us with obstacles and various limitations that stand on our way before we can even think about making a change in our life, before we are able to take a risk. Therefore, I believe that if one is not truly ready to take a chance, and try to change his or her life, or go after an ambitious goal, we should respect each individuals' unique life situations and do not force our own opinions on anyone. When one is ready to take a chance, he or she will do so not a minute sooner.
"Anyone who ever gave you confidence, you owe them a lot"
We often take many things for granted in life. We get motivated, we get inspired, we achieve great things, but what we don't do very often is stop and thank those who have been the source of our drive, our inspiration, even though we know that without such individuals in our life, things would be very different, and most likely not in a positive way. So, I hope that we take the time out of our busy lives and thank those who helped us up and have been our source of motivation in our life.
"Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential"
Many start but very few actually continue their journey towards reaching their goals, plans, and outcomes that we hope to see. For example, many embark on the continuous fitness and personal development journey, especially at the beginning of each New Year. Typically, such journey last for two to three weeks at most. Why? Because, things get difficult and not as fun as they might have been at the beginning. So, many stop, and make plans to try again at a later time, which in most cases does not take place until beginning of the following year. What's missing here, in my opinion, is the continuous effort and never-give-up attitude.
